TECHNICAL training rather than TACTICAL training

Competition, be it for a place on the team or between local clubs (youth, amateur or professional), is tough - the will to succeed, be first and win is endemic and tangible at every level. Therefore the atmosphere and attitudes in sports is often emotional and incredibly competitive. However experience has taught that this can, when taken out of context, be detrimental to the development of players.

Therefore this type of competitive mentality MUST be put into perspective. We train players to look beyond mere game results.

Working on the TECHNICAL aspects of the game of soccer – from a young age is, the best method for which to develop players. Our goal is to implement programs for our players which will facilitate the advancement of these skills in an optimum learning environment.

When it comes to youth soccer the most important factor for children is they must have fun, they must enjoy what they are doing, and they must focus on TECHNICAL training rather than TACTICAL training. The will to win should not overshadow the first and foremost responsibility of each coach – that is to develop each player on an individual level.

Players need to master ball control, first touch and then the techniques needed to be able to execute strategic plays in matches. These techniques include, passing, heading, tackling, dribbling, running with a ball and finishing. Without basic technique it is very difficult to execute any kind of play!

Once the technical is mastered, coaches and players can then start working on understanding the tactical aspects of the game, such as roles and responsibilities of the different positions, combination plays etc.

At the highest level all of these techniques have to be learned with and without pressure and at speed, so players can replicate match conditions in training. This is where a structured and professional program becomes vital to success, training has to be intense, interesting, challenging, address both strengths and weaknesses of players and be relevant.

SCOR's dedication to technical development will be supported with the introduction to the Coerver Soccer Training System, beginning Winter 2012. Philosophically this will change the way SCOR players are trained and challenged at all levels.

The primary objective of SCOR is to deliver all of this to our players, expose them to a professional environment and constantly asses, evaluate and improve the individual skills.

Winter Training Plans

Come January the club will be running a multi-stage indoor training program and occasional scrimmages as part of our indoor/winter program. After some research on player development best practices we are investing in off season training for the SCOR teams. Many clubs such as NEFC will train all winter and enter off season tournaments. This is the model that we will adopt.  We will have a comprehensive team template that covers the second half of the year's team / club commitments.

As with any non-league event there are many moving parts, dozens of individual schedules to contend with, facility reservations, costs etc. Each event involves hours of planning to play a single 60 minute match. Most clubs make zero effort to keep their teams engaged between seasons. We do this to give your child the best development opportunity available...We don't do this for us. We do the very best we can...be patient please.

Winter weather is right around the corner...

Just because winter weather is right around the corner, it doesn't mean you need to stop trying to improve technique. Its an opportunity for something new. Here are two easy ways anyone can play indoors, without destroying the house!

• Toe Taps and Foundations: Having a great touch on the top and the sides of the ball are key to ball mastery.

• Grab a Tennis Ball: Juggling a tennis ball is a perfect exercise for indoors. Find a spot inside without any breakables. It's a little harder, but a great way to improve your touch.

When playing outside isn't an option, it's all about being creative to still get touches in over the winter. So head to the gym, garage, or basement, and use a tennis or size 1 ball to keep raising your level during the off-season. But remember - be safe and don't break anything!

SCOR to Host NSCAA Coaching Course Again

SCOR FC will host the NSCAA Junior Level VI coaching course the second weekend of March. This course was formally known as the Advanced Regional and is the minimum coaching requirement for SCOR coaches to enter MAPLE, MASC or NEP competition. The course will once again be run by NSCAA National Master Coach, Giovanni Pacini.  Stay tuned for additional information.

I'd also like to encourage our parents and coaches to increase their youth sports awareness. I found some really excellent FREE courses from NHFS.

Community Matters - SCOR Food Drive

Some hard working SCOR players help to sort food donations.

Thanks for the support. It's a good beginning but we have a couple more weeks to go. I'm already in trouble for filling the den with boxes...might as well keep it going. We had some generous donations from the U11B and U12G SCOR teams. Please check your teams calendar for your teams collection day. We are looking for a couple people to coordinate their teams collection day. Its really simple and not very time consuming. Please reach out to me if you have any questions. davenoel@comcast.net
